Welcome to This Noshtalgic Life. This blog celebrates food, adventure, being outdoors, and eating, encouraging you to gather and consume delicious morsels with friends and loved ones, wherever you may roam. My name is Heather and I am so glad you are here!
Come follow along to find inspiration and guides to help live life to its fullest and enjoy everything this amazing planet has to offer us.
I’m a native New Englander. I spent a large chunk of time as a visual artist wandering and dreaming in Arizona, then absorbing the wilds of Alaska – from Fairbanks to McCarthy – before finally settling down in the Green Mountain State with an MFA in Printmaking, buckets of inspiration, and a sweet family.
I now live in Central Vermont with my husband, our two kids, an Alaskan Husky, two cats, and a bunch of chickens.
I love food!
I am completely and happily obsessed with everything related to food, gleefully creating in the kitchen for pretty much my whole life. It is extremely rare to have a conversation with me where I am not sharing my excitement about something I cooked, ate, wish to eat, or heard I should try.
Bringing that excitement to backcountry meals is super fun! I have loads of ideas, hacks, and tricks to share when it comes to planning camp food. It’s important to fuel well for your outdoor adventures!
I love to cook just about any type of cuisine but most often you’ll find me making curries, fermenting everything I can, or throwing together something simple from the food we grow and raise ourselves.
Family Life
We are a homeschooling family and we ALL love to eat! There is a big garden here, with fruit bushes, trees, and chickens that roam. We enjoy adventuring together and this lifestyle gives us much more freedom to do so.
Traveling opens up new opportunities to experience foods we may not have access to at home. It also means opening up to new cultural experiences, letting go of previously conceived notions of what we should eat daily, and fully embracing our surroundings, therefore, having richer adventures.
Nature
A sense of wonder and a love for the natural world guides where I choose to live and travel, both now and in the past. The number one way that our family connects is to spend time together outdoors; we walk, hike, paddle, ski, and camp together.
We camp year-round in Vermont and being the total food nerd that I am, I really enjoy planning meals and packing food for our rustic adventures. Our chosen travel locations are fueled by a love for the wilderness and magical outdoor exploration.
You can find posts on This Noshtalgic Life that help guide you to adventure outdoors as well such as camping food lists, gear suggestions, hiking food lists and recipes to make when camping and backpacking. I will also share recipes to make when you return to home base!
Adventuring
My husband, Matt, and I met in 2005 and we haven’t stopped exploring the outdoors together since. We have enjoyed backcountry camping in places such as Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Exuma Cays, Bahamas, and Wrangell St. Elias National Park, Alaska.
We stay in remote and unusual accommodations in Mexico, the coast of Maine, and ski-in cabins or paddle-in campgrounds in our own home state of Vermont. Follow along for travel guides on many of these areas and more!
Our kids have joined us in our passion for adventure and travel. They have grown up spending time at our remote cabin in McCarthy, Alaska, experiencing the true wilderness.
